I've stumbled upon something that might help you make sense of all the candidates for the next presidential election. While I have a feeling it will come down to Clinton vs Guiliani, I can hold out hope that both of them will screw up tremendously and be forced out of the running.

Anyway, here's a handy-dandy chart that gives you an idea of their stance on all the major issues. By all means, do not take this as the gospel because politicians will change their tune according to who is paying the band. It also doesn't give you every little nuance of their positions, but it does a good job of sorting out things they've flipped back and forth on. A good guide to know what candidates need more research.

ETA: I wanted to add that this is just showing you what they've SAID, not how they've voted in the House or Senate or what have you, so YMMV.

Right? I just keep hoping that something happens and we don't get Clinton as a candidate. She just sets my teeth on edge.

Uhg. Tell me about it. If it comes down to the two of them, I may seriously consider going Libertarian this time. I'd have to hold my nose as I did so since they are basically Republican-lite, but if you look at her positions, she's no better than some of the most staunch Conservatives.

Ooh. Thanks! American politics kind of make my head hurt, but it's also impossible to look away from, in a train-crash kind of way. I've been really good at reading Newsweek recently, though, so I have a good idea of who the Democrat candidates are. :D

Heh. They make my head hurt as well, just for the sheer insanity of it all.

If you are interested in American history and politics though, I'd highly recommend Assume the Position & Assume the Position 201. They're short shows (only 30 mins in length) but they give brilliant insight into how world and American history/politics works.

I went to an American middle and high school, so I like to think that I have a decent understanding of American politics and history. My post-Civil War history is pretty good, though I'm a bit fuzzy on the details before then.

I get a little overwhelmed with American politics because it's just all so BIG and IMPORTANT and has consequences and stuff. And the value system is SO different than the one we have in Canada.

I still like it, though. Not QUITE as much as I like UK politics, but that's because UK politics is insanity. :D

Oh, well that gives you a bit of help. Hee! Still check those shows out because they are HYSTERICAL and really packed with a lot of info.

Yeah, US politics does come off a bit tame compared to the UK at times, but at least they let their crazy show. We're too damn uptight for that.

Useful! I'm a registered Independent, and in California that means I can't vote on anybody until Final Two (plus small parties), but it's still nice to be able to clap or shake my fist along the way.

I was registered independent for years until the last election. I really did not like Kerry. I wish Gen. Wesley Clark would run again. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.

I hate politics. Thanks for posting something to make it just a bit less painful.

Yeah, I've honestly been burnt out on politics for a while so something like this makes research easy.

Whoever runs, I just hope people vote. People in this country take for granted what people in others countries die trying to gain. Voting is a huge thing with me.

Yeah, that's a big thing with me. Although, one could argue that those too apathetic to vote are unlikely to follow the issues that need to be addressed anyway, so they'd be making an little more than an uneducated guess.

Even so, one would have to live in a bunker to be totally unexposed to the concepts by the time election day rolls around.

I seriously hope it doesn't come down to either of them, as when it comes down to it, they're both pretty much Republicans, and I don't fall in line with their beliefs. Sure, it's good that a woman is getting far, but, honestly, if it's between the the prestige of having the "first woman president" and having a good leader, I'm going to choose the latter every time.

What's funny is that even though there is SO much information out there, the only people who look at it are the people who are more inclined to actually find out what the issues are. The rest, sadly, don't care, don't vote...and it really bugs me. :/ Though, again, I'd always rather have someone not vote rather than vote if they have no idea who and what they're supporting.

I don't know if it's available for other candidates, but I follow Barack Obama's Senate votes on LJ via RSS. It's actually really handy.

Thanks! This is definitely very helpful.

I remember back during the last election our campus CALPIRG charter did everything they could to go get people out there and voting whether it be at the polling place or through the mail. It was difficult trying to figure out what the politicians were actually for and against since, especially with Kerry, he kept changing his mind quite a bit.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I was looking for an Obama "yes we can" icon, saw yours, and wanted to snag it if that's cool with you. Giving proper credit, of course. Do you have any other Obama or yes we can icons?

Oh, and you should check out this video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=EdDzvmY1XPo) about why Obama is the preferred candidate over Hillary. It's a detailed, point by point presentation from Stanford Law professor Lawrence Lessig. It's the most cogent argument I've seen regarding these candidates. I encourage you to watch it and spread it around, and ask others to do the same.
