Chapter 1

The transfer of the memory data had just completed and Rose was about to head down the corridor after the Doctor and Mickey when she saw them heading her way. The Doctor was a fair few paces ahead of Mickey, who looked like he was doggedly trying to catch up.

“Oi, what took you boys so long?” she teased. “And where’s the new K-9? The transfer just finished.”

“Weeeell…” replied the Doctor as he flipped switches and the great pillar in the center of the console roared to life. “We’ve got to make a trip out for a part. We need a power cell of some sort. Actually, it was Mickey’s idea. The trip out, that is.”

She must have looked shocked at the concept of him actually listening to an idea of Mickey’s because the Doctor quickly added, “It’s the only option available to us.” The engine of the TARDIS ground to a halt and he flashed a grin. “Here we are.”

“Besides, I’m starving,” complained Mickey.

“Ah, the true motivation reveals itself!” the Doctor grinned. “Me too. Let’s go.” He grabbed his long, brown coat and headed towards the doors.

Rose rolled her eyes. “Boys,” she huffed as she pulled on her jacket. The Doctor and Mickey were a good five steps ahead of her so she skipped down the ramp to catch up. She reached them just after they had stepped out the TARDIS doors. Coming up between them, she linked her arms with theirs and grinned.

“Lets go shopping!”

The Doctor gave a theatric, put out groan. “Spend me into the poor house, you will.”

“Oh please, ten quid says I’ll have to stop you from picking up every gadget you can find. I’ll be lucky if you don’t lick anything.”

“I’ve learned not to bet against you, Miss Tyler. You play dirty.” The Doctor whinged.

Mickey watched the exchange with interest.

“Double or nothing, then. You still haven’t paid up on your last bet.” She gave him a challenging stare.

“Fine. You’re on.” He sniffed and looked straight ahead. “I’ve as good as won.”

They continued on down the street, arm in arm, sometimes engaging in banter but mostly in a companionable silence. The sun was setting and the air was getting cooler. Neon store signs and street lamps flickered to life. Occasionally they passed a restaurant or café, and eventually the sights and smells of food got to be too much for Mickey to bear.

“Hey, wait here for a minute.” He told Rose.

“Oh, what now?” asked the Doctor.

“I told you. I’m hungry. I’m stopping in here to grab something to eat.”

“Fine, fine. Just hurry up. When does this shop of yours close?”

“We’ve got a couple of hours. Just give me five minutes.”

Rose leaned against a signpost. The Doctor looked over his shoulder in the direction of the small café Mickey had popped into and then back to Rose. He leaned forward and with a conspiratorial whisper said, “We could just go on ahead. He’ll catch up.”

Rose shot him a look like he was an idiot. “No. That’s mean.”

“All right. Have it your way.” And he began to wander off.

She immediately reached out and grabbed his hand. He stopped and turned back to her.

“You’re staying right here with me. Besides, you have no idea where you’re going.”

He rolled his eyes then flashed her a grin. “Oh, all right.” He threaded his fingers through hers and gave her hand a little squeeze. “If you insist.”

They were still holding hands when Mickey emerged carrying an overstuffed sandwich of some sort with both hands, his cheeks full.

“Feel better?” Rose asked with a giggle.

“Mmummph.” Was the muffled response.

When he got closer, the Doctor leaned forward to see what he was eating and abruptly pulled away.

“What is that? Blimey, it smells awful!”

Rose looked over at the sandwich, and without batting an eye, immediately said, “Roast beef and sauerkraut on rye.”

“Well, you’d do well to keep downwind from us with that thing.” the Doctor told him, wrinkling his nose. “I’m not hungry in the least any more. Honestly, what is it with you and pickled products?”

Leading Rose by the hand, he walked on down the street while Mickey tagged along behind, happily eating away.

They had been walking for a few minutes, when Rose had a realization. “Hang on, Doctor. How are we supposed to pay for this? It’s not like I have money, and Mickey’s not exactly rich.”

“Oi!”

“Well it’s true.” Rose said over her shoulder.

Mickey tilted his head to the side in grudging acknowledgement.

The Doctor glanced around. “Well, I had been hoping to run into a cash point along the way.”

“What, so you can make a withdrawal out of your account with the Intergalactic Bank of Time Travelers?” Mickey laughed.

“Something like that, yeah.”

Mickey snorted and took another bite of his sandwich. “Fairs fwon uh ahew.”

“What?”

Mickey swallowed and repeated himself. “I said there’s one up ahead.”

They stopped to make a withdrawal and Mickey boggled at the stack of cash taken out. “You could buy half the store with that!”

The Doctor looked at the money, cut the pile in half and handed one of the halves to Mickey. “Here, go buy yourself something pretty.”

Mickey was finishing off the last bite of his sandwich as they reached the doors of the glass storefront. He balled up the wax paper wrapper and tossed it into a nearby bin.

“Here we go.” he said pointing to the entrance and then followed them in through the automatic doors.

The store was indeed quite big. They glanced around to determine the best place to start their search.

“I need something renewable. Where would we find something like that?” asked the Doctor.

Mickey thought for a minute. “We could look at laptop batteries, yeah?”

“Doesn’t your laptop run down within an hour or so though, Mickey?” Rose asked. “Fat lot of good it will do Sarah Jane if he can’t go any longer than that.”

“That’s very true,” replied the Doctor. “But…I could set up a series of batteries to rotate use. Set them up to recharge when they aren’t active.”

“She’d still have to plug him in though.”

“You wound me with your doubt, Rose Tyler.” He gasped in mock horror then flashed a knowing grin and leaned forward. “When was the last time you plugged in your phone?”

Rose stopped in mid-breath, about to rebut his arrogance, when she realized it was true. She honestly couldn’t remember. The Doctor looked positively smug.

“Okay, you got me there.”

“Yup! Come on, let’s see what we can find.”

“This way.” said Mickey, pointing in the general direction of the computer department.

As they made their way to the back corner of the store, Mickey took the lead. The Doctor was content to follow next to Rose, carefully focusing on where they were going and not the veritable treasure trove of gadgets surrounding him.

“Sure you don’t want to stop and look at anything, Doctor? There might be things here you could use…” Rose said in a not quite innocent tone.

“Nope! Just need to get what we came for.” He gave her a knowing grin, playing along with the game.

She grinned back, accepting the challenge.

They reached the computer department and were immediately set upon by a ferocious sales lady. She was short and heavyset and her hair looked like it had been shellacked into defying gravity. Her voice was nasally and she half spoke, half screeched. “Can I help you?”

Mickey spoke up. “Yeah, we’re looking for laptop batteries.”

“Right this way.” She led them several aisles over to the battery section “What type of laptop is it?”

“Oh, it’s not for a laptop, it’s for a…oof!” The Doctor was cut off by Rose elbowing him in the ribs.

“What he means is we’re just looking. Thanks.”

The sales lady looked at them oddly then nodded down the aisle she had led them to. “Very well, I’ll be nearby should you need me.” She walked off, leaving them to their search.

“What’d you do that for?” hissed the Doctor as he rubbed his sore side.

Rose rolled her eyes. “You just have no clue, do you?”

Mickey snorted. “Anyway, how many are we going to need?”

The Doctor crouched down to look at the various packs hanging along the aisle. He started muttering calculations out loud. Rose gave a paranoid glance around the store and saw the sales lady watching them with a suspicious eye. As soon as the woman made eye contact with her, she began bustling in their general direction.

“Heads up,” murmured Rose.

“Finding everything all right? Can I get you anything?”

“We’re fine, thanks!” Rose said with a smile frozen on her face. Still smiling, she turned to Mickey and whispered through her teeth “Keep her busy, would ya? She’s getting suspicious.”

Mickey pouted. “Why me?”

“Because I have no idea what half this stuff is or what obscure stuff to ask for as a distraction. You do.”

At his put out look, Rose leaned forward and gave him a genuine smile and a wink. “Besides, the Doctor told you to buy yourself something pretty.”

The realization slowly dawned on him and slow smile spread across his face. The glint in his eyes at the prospect of new shiny objects made Rose laugh. “Go on. Get whatever you want.”

“Right, I’ll be back.” He made a beeline for the sales lady and began speaking animatedly with her. Rose stifled a laugh as the sales lady first looked taken aback at the sudden change in attitude and then ecstatic at the prospect of a large commission.

She turned back to the Doctor to find him sitting in the middle of the row with his glasses on and stacks of different batteries all around him. She groaned inwardly. He was like a kid in a candy store.

“Okay, have you figured out what you need yet?”

“Ten point eight volts by four point four amp hours would be…” He ran his hand through his hair “forty seven point five two watt hours.”

She sat down next to him. “Have you got it then?”

He looked over at her. “I think so. We’ll need six of these.” He dumped a stack of batteries on her lap and stood up. “Where’s Mickey gone?”

Rose scooped up the stack of batteries and stood up with him. “He’s distracting the sales lady.”

“I’ll say he is.”

She looked over and saw a huge stack of boxes sitting at the check out register. Mickey was dropping another box off and then heading right back out to the sales floor.

She laughed. “We’ll never get out of here now.”

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.” He rolled his eyes with a dramatic flair.

“Well, it’s your fault. You’re the one who told him to buy something pretty.”

“So I did. Come on, let’s put these back and get out of here.” They began hanging all the batteries they didn’t need back up.

“We can’t just leave him, you know.” Rose said eventually.

The Doctor raised an eyebrow. “Says who? He looks perfectly happy right now.” He nodded in Mickey’s direction. “Besides, I’m still hungry.”

“I thought you lost your appetite.” She shot back.

He grinned. “Well, it seems I’ve found it again. Come on, let’s go. He’ll never notice. We’ll get chips. He can meet us back at the TARDIS. He’s a big boy and he knows where to go. I’m famished. You wouldn’t want me to waste away would you?”

“Cheeky.”

He only grinned, grabbed the batteries from her and headed for the checkout counter.

Nice fun stuff! Time Mickey got something out of him. I'd definitely go for an eBook, Mickey boy, if he's paying.

Ha! I've always felt bad for Mickey getting snubbed, and if he's gonna get ditched, he may as well get something out of it. Hee!

Just finished reading both parts and I'm really enjoying where this story is going. ^_^ I really like where you started this story because I haven't read many fics that start off when Mickey first begins his role as a companion.

Again, I'm really loving this story so far can't wait to see where you go after this!

Yes, I wish we had seen a bit more of him as a companion. I really loved how he was one of the few to realize that the Doctor's BS is just that. :) They had a very brotherly relationship in the end.

Thanks for reading! Glad you're enjoying it. :)

“Well, you’d do well to keep downwind from us with that thing.” the Doctor told him, wrinkling his nose. “I’m not hungry in the least any more. Honestly, what is it with you and pickled products?”

Pickled products! He does seem to have quite a thing for them.

Yay, another fun chapter. I can just see the Doctor on the floor, rooting through all the batteries, LOL. And Mickey got something for his trouble, too! Hmm, will he remember to take any of it with him when he goes traveling on the TARDIS? Oh, well, at least he knows the Doctor cares. *bg*
