Guess what? When you use the word "retarded" in a fic title when a character isn't ACTUALLY FUCKING RETARDED?

YOU MIGHT BE A JACKASS.

JUST SAYIN'.

Any use of that word that lessens it's ACTUAL MEDICAL FUCKING DEFINITION is derogatory. I don't give a shit about it's synonyms. If you are using it's synonyms as a reason to use THAT WORD then, guess what? YOU CAN USE THE FUCKING SYNONYMS IN YOUR FIC &/OR TITLE.

IT'S REALLY EASY. WATCH:

Repressed

SEE HOW EASY THAT WAS? AAAAMAAAAAZING.

GOD FUCKING DAMN IT ALL.

Don't fuck with me after I've been battling Walmart on a Saturday afternoon. LOL

(PS- SEE, LOOK, I CAN MAKE PUT-UPON OPEN POSTS ABOUT FANDOM TOO. TRANSLATION: THIS IS A RARE UNLOCKED POST.)

STICK WITH ME, YOUNG PADAWAN. I WILL BE YOUR QUI GON IVY TO YOUR SHINYWAN KENOPAL.

J/k. Honestly, I don't normally go off about it's useage. I ranted in favor of it's use in that Ben Stiller movie (the name escapes me for now), but that was because they were using it in conversation to refer to the ACTUAL MEDICAL CONDITION. This? NOT SO MUCH.

90% of the time when I see it used online it's by douchebags, it's got to be said. I can't comment about medical usage, but I've seen enough people getting seriously upset by it being used that I have an automatic "NO" reaction to it.

Date: 2010-11-06 08:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com
It's still used as a medical term. The official diagnosis they gave Nick is "severe mental retardation - encephalopathy". Encephalopathy is a big word for "We don't know what this is or what caused it". He's one symptom from a diagnosis of autism - he's got inexplicable constant muscle twitching. That's it. If he didn't have that, he'd be officially diagnosed "autistic". It's just easier to say "autism" when people ask. The twitching is inconsequential to his behaviour and mental capabilities.

Seeing it used out of context in any way ticks me off, but I don't normally speak up until someone else has and been shut down by derailment or outright willfulness. Obviously, once that's occurred, I have NO PROBLEM speaking my mind. LOL

LOL I'm actually still pretty hot under the collar. Enough to be completely blowing off other responsibilities right now. I need to find my zen or I'm likely to put things away and not find them when I need them. XD

I hate arguing over the internet, but the responses you got were so mindblowingly and willfully obtuse, I had to.

*Pats you* OK, then, sounding like you are pretty calm. I AM IMPRESSED. Also, blowing off responsibilities is a great way to spend the time. Unless you have... like... a carpet than needs beating (does anyone beat carpets any more? XD). That could be great for the return of zen.

Right. In Tropic Thunder it made sense, not just because they were talking about the actual medical condition, but because it also made a point about how the entertainment industry appropriates mental illness and other medical conditions and uses them for awards bait.

But when someone says "OMG You're such a retard," or "That's so retarded," then NO.

*sigh*

I can never figure out if people do this because they're stupid or cruel. I'd like to opt for stupid but it's most likely cruel.

Also, as far I know, mental retardation has fallen under developmental disability for quite some time, making it part of a larger designation of disorders/diseases and it was never just "retarded" but rather mental retardation. Folks should get it right if they're going to use the original classification.

Of course, it doesn't sound as insulting if you use the full name, does it? Bastards.

Yeah, I think it was a case of someone trying to be cute and they got called on it and then tried to get out of it by saying it was technically a correct word and how dare we ask she conform to modern English just because of some jerks, it wasn't used like that in the old days.

FAIL ALL AROUND.

You want to know something really funny.

I kind of actually knew who this post was about without you mentioning any names.

This, this person seems to have no consideration for any other person but themselves.

Some people on a previous fic of hers, asked very politely to be warned about a character death and what did this delightfully charming person say it return: people die every day in real life why should I warn about it.

*cue jaw drop* may be it's because a lot of people read fic abecause it's their happy place and THEY DON"T NEED TO READ THEIR FAVOURITE PERSON DYING WITHOUT ANY BLOODY WARNING.

She is a compete and utter douche.

UGH, I think I may know who you're talking about. I've bumped into that author a few times at TTU and TNC. I also noticed that particular author can't seem to leave a review without a negative attached to it. Like, 'I liked this bbbbuuuuutttt, this could've been better.' I noticed that a lot on her reviews. That's ok, concrit is good IMHO but every review you leave is like that so makes me believe it's not about concrit.

Anyway, OT, lol. And I agree with you about the title of that fic, ugh.

Yeah, this is the... 3rd time, I think, this author has used really "poor judgment" in their fics. I put that in quotes because I honestly think it's all done deliberately. Like she's going to teach fandom something. Whatever. I'm done with her.

Just coming over to say thank you for saying something about this. I actually cringed when I saw that title because I knew that was a really poor choice of words. Regardless of how an author feels about a word, if it has an offense connotation to it, just don't use it. Don't even invite the possibility of offending someone and creating wank. And when you're called out, don't argue about someone being offended. Just apologize, fix it and move on.

Also LOL @ the new anon comment. I think this is what my weekend was missing. Internet hilarity and fail.

Thanks. :) You would think after so many of these sorts of instances, it would become easier for the author to figure maybe her approach need reevaluation.

All the people with cerebral palsy that I've ever known get white-hot furious over the misuse of "retarded," in every case because it was frequently used to incorrectly describe their own conditions back in the days when CP was poorly understood - and was frequently thrown around as an insult.

That she would come in and pretend to be someone with an unrelated disability for the sake of looking sympathetic - what a very special snowflake she is.

Bonus points for her using the term "disentitled" to describe people who either have disabilities or their advocates being upset over the abuse of terms related to their conditions. Privilege showing much?

Date: 2010-11-08 04:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com
Given that my normal reflex when someone uses that word outside of the very specific medical context is to slap the back of their head, your restraint is admirable.

I don't belong/subscribe to either of the comms where the original fic popped up, but it wasn't hard to pick out. I thought you and [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals were quite civilized and reasonable in pointing out her poor - and obviously quite deliberate - word choice.

The fact that she was using the term "retarded" specifically as an insult and then gets all stalky-butthurt over getting called out... what f*cking hypocritical bullsh*t. Yes, clearly, commenting with anything other than telling her what a genius she is and gushing is being a bully.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

From: [identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com
Dude, IDEK what she was thinking. I normally wouldn't have had it come up on my radar either, but it was a subject of discussion elsewhere and I asked to see what everyone was speaking about. Even then, I wasn't going to say anything unless forced to.

Then she tried to "school" Opal and I sort of said "Um, okay... NO."

I have no actual confirmation the second anon was her, short of Opal checking IP addresses, but it seemed awfully convenient someone with a brain related disability came in to white knight and conveniently didn't have an LJ to boot.

Whatever. When the Anonmeme agrees with me, you know you've just opened the seventh seal of fuck-ups.

ETA: Fuuuuu... so many typos...
