I can never figure out if people do this because they're stupid or cruel. I'd like to opt for stupid but it's most likely cruel.

Also, as far I know, mental retardation has fallen under developmental disability for quite some time, making it part of a larger designation of disorders/diseases and it was never just "retarded" but rather mental retardation. Folks should get it right if they're going to use the original classification.

Of course, it doesn't sound as insulting if you use the full name, does it? Bastards.

Yeah, I think it was a case of someone trying to be cute and they got called on it and then tried to get out of it by saying it was technically a correct word and how dare we ask she conform to modern English just because of some jerks, it wasn't used like that in the old days.
